One of the first of a kind carbon capture retrofitting projects in the world has been completed successfully by our yard for a 50K DWT product tanker!
The system combines filtering SOX and capturing CO2. The methodology has similarities with the existing technology; the exhaust from M/E enters the scrubber tower to eliminate the SOX and then the CO2 is captured in a special chemical and stored in an onboard tank. An aft peak tank had been chosen in our project for collecting the CO2, therefore additional cofferdams were created to prevent any contact with other compartments (like FW tanks, etc. ) and a special surface treatment was applied to convert the aft peak tank to a chemical storage tank.
As with most of the retrofitting projects, once again, we are happy to be one of the first to install this new system and we are eagerly looking forward to the next one!
